Where does seaglass come from?

Today, I want to offer you some information about the origins of seaglass.  I was just talking with friends about some seaglass I found in Antarctica, near an old, abandoned whaling It probably came from currents from Asia, maybe Japan or maybe from glass debris from the whalers.  Some seaglass origins remain mysterious and unknown.  Others are pretty obvious, like old bottles -  whisky, beer, coca cola, fresca, etc.  The rarer the color, like red or orange, it is easier to guess its provenance.  Most orange, for example, comes from art glass like vases, whereas whites can come from windows, bottles, dinner ware.  If you want to learn more about the origins of seaglass, I would suggest you research old bottles.  A wonderful resource that I use is an identification deck of cards published by Sea Glass publishing. com   A friend of mine bought it for me as a gift, but you surely can order it on line.  Also, it has pictures of the various colors of seaglass.  Remember though, that pure seaglass is tumbled by the seas, not by a machine, not manufactured, not "seeded" in an ocean, and is smooth and soft in texture, not sharp.

Lily Show in Virginia

These are such beautiful flowers, I have to share them.  I  took the pictures last week at a Lily show competition in Virginia.  The flowers are judged as well as the arrangements.  I just enjoyed looking at them all!

This is to represent an airport and control tower!

A Novel About Seaglass

Here's the perfect novel to read at the beach, and it is entitled Sea Glass by Anita Shreve.   I read it with my book club about five or six years ago, and it really intrigued me, and started me on my own quest for sea glass.  Now I am rereading it, since I can appreciate the descriptions of the sea glass finds so much more.

Dance, Love, Sing, Live...

In addition to seaglass, I also collect magnets....
Recently I was at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., and found this great magnet with these words to live by...

dance as though no one is watching you,
love as though you have never been hurt before,
sing as though no one can hear you,
live as though heaven is on earth.  -    (Souza)

Sorry I don't know where it comes from, but it is attributed to Souza.  Anyone know?

You Get What You Pay For

If you have studied up on seaglass, you know that prices are all over the map.  Of course, most artisans who use pure, beachcombed seaglass and fine metals and gemstones charge accordingly. You may find there are dealers who price their items very low in comparison, but be careful, especially if they are rare colors of seaglass like orange, red, blue, yellow. These items are likely to be fake, "artisan", manmade, artificial, crafted, tumbled "seaglass" lookalikes and the metals may be silver tone, gold colored. Do you really want that?

Also, there are manufactured pieces, not handmade by an artist.  If you think diamond vs. rhinestone, you get my point, but in this case, the "diamond" doesn't cost that much more than the fake!

Lucky Sea Glass doesn't run many sales, so keep coming back.  Repeat customers receive 10% off any item.  Fans of my facebook page receive 5% off on online purchases.  And, shipping is free for orders of $100 or more online in the U.S.Lucky Sea Glass on facebook  Good luck to you!

Seaglass earrings and a unisex pendant

I don't usually make jewelry for men, but this simple white seaglass from Hawaii just seemed perfect for a summer masculine accessory.  I added one of the shells a friend found in Florida, just for fun.  It's on a silver plated bail.  I haven't put it on my website, but if you are interested, it is just $30 plus shipping.

These earrings have white seaglass I found in Puerto Rico, coral branches, and genuine tourmaline beads with sterling silver ear wires  Item 91 $75

Bermuda seaglass with sterling silver wire work and silver plated French hooks  Item 431 $96
Also, I want to share a couple of earrings that I made recently.  If you are interested in them, just send me an email at contact@luckyseaglass.com

Seashells and seaglass

Yesterday I saw a customer of mine and she told me she had been wanting to give me some shells she had collected in Florida.  She gave me a bag of about thirty shells, each has a hole in it that I can use to add to a design.  Now,  I think I will try combining seaglass and seashells -- will post a picture when I have a design I like!
But, once again, I am so lucky to have customers like this one.

More Places to Search for Seaglass

Summer time and it is time to enjoy the beach!  Why not take a walk, and look for seaglass while you do?  Check my previous posts for good seaglass beaches in Hawaii, California, Spain, Russia, Greece and Romania.  Today, I will just mention some more.
Of course, the beaches I described in my Bermuda posts are really good -- at both ends of the islanda -- near Alexandra armory on the east end and at glass beach on the west end.  Check my Bermuda posts for details.

Then there is Lake Erie!  I have found great seaglass along the shoreline in Ohio, both east and west of Cleveland.  Better on the west side.  People say that near Buffalo, there are good lake Erie beaches too.

In Puerto Rico, I have found seaglass near Rincon.  We stayed at a Hilton there, and if you walk along their beach, there is a lot of seaglasss -- mostly white or brown.

I recently received a comment from someone in Canada, who says that there is seaglass on Prince Edward Island.  Hmmm... sounds like a good place to go for a vacation!

Please let me know if you find seaglass elsewhere, and I can share it here.  Thanks.

Wish someone good luck with Lucky Sea Glass

A while ago I wrote about why Lucky Sea Glass is lucky.  And now, I have thought about it some more! Some of my customers and myself, too, have given Lucky Sea Glass jewelry to someone who could use some good luck.  It is like finding a four leaf clover or a lucky rabbit's foot == a good luck sign.  If you have someone who is getting married, graduating from school, or just needs some good luck wishes, please be sure to check out my website.  Items can be returned for a credit good for one year (see my website for details).   Good Luck to you!

Seaglass Barrettes

Just added another barrette!  They are so much fun to wear, and securely hold even fine hair.  Prices are in the $50-$65 range, depending upon the elements, on my website.

I have a large collection of seaglass from around the world, so now I am experimenting with some new product designs, in addition to the seaglass jewelry. These barrettes are 2.25 inches wide and have secure French clasps. They are fun to wear.
As always, contact me if you would like a custom made design, and please let me know if you like these!

California sunset

California was fun. Here's a great sunset picture from a previous trip there.

Couldn't resist posting another. Sunset over the Pacific Ocean is quite spectacular, even for an Easterner like me.

Travel Tips

I've been thinking that summer is a popular time to get away -- and so you may appreciate some tips from a world traveler!  I know you can always find ideas in guide books, etc., but here are some ideas that have worked for me.

  1. Always bring some plastic bags -- zip lock is best.  That way, if you find some sea glass along the way or if you have a wet bathing suit, whatever, you can put it in your suitcase and not worry about it.
  2. Pack a first aid kit with antibiotic cream, antinausea, etc. , and bandaids.
  3. If you are traveling with a significant other, split your clothes between both of your bags, so if one bag is lost, you still have some clothes!
  4. Bring one of those folding nylon bags for shopping trips, a beach bag, or even as your carryon.  Longchamps makes a sturdy one.
  5. Read a book about the place you are visiting!
  6. Arrange for cell phone service where you are going.  Sometimes you can get a cheaper rate if you call ahead for International Roaming.
  7. Don't pack valuables.  But, do wear some Lucky Sea Glass jewelry  :)  Sorry, couldn't resist.
Have fun!     Sea glass from around the world

Beach Therapy

Beach in Bermuda near the Fairmont Southampton
I just returned from California. It's amazing how rejuvenating it is to walk along a beach with friends with the wind in our faces, the dachsies running about, the surf crashing and a beautiful sunny day.  It was a shoreline near Half Moon Bay, and I did find a couple of pieces of sea glass, too.  Mainly, though, it was just a time to be with our dear friends.  Try walking along a beach if you are lucky enough to live near one! Sorry I didn't bring my camera on this trip.

Afterwards, I created a Lucky Sea Glass pendant for my friend, and I pray it will bring her and her husband good luck right away.

Sea Glass Beach

Sometimes it is so hard to find a single piece of well tumbled, opaque, gem quality sea glass, but in Bermuda, there is a Glass Beach that makes it almost too easy.  The hardest part actually was finding it!  Please enjoy this picture.   I am having fun creating beautiful designs with my Bermuda finds!
