Drilling Sea Glass!

I bought a new Dremel drill the other day, brought it home, and it wasn't working.  I couldn't remove the collet nut -- which is basic to inserting a drill bit.  After reading the manual, calling Dremel  (who said it was a defective product), I returned it to the store.  I should have been suspicious since the carton had been opened.

Anyway, I bought another Dremel, and this one is working great.  Fortunately, I bought a set of collets, since it didn't come with them.  Now I am excited to create some new pieces with drilled sea glass.  Here's a couple I did yesterday when I was experimenting with my new drill.

Are You A Sea Glass Collector?

I first wrote about collecting about a year ago, but it still fascinates me.  Of course, people collect all kinds of things -- stamps, coins, penguins, dolls, cars, SEA GLASS! Today, I thought I'd repost my article for those of you who may have missed it.... ...
I've been meaning to write about the psychology of collecting!  Have any of you guessed that my first career (before sea glass jewelry designing) was as a psychologist?  I worked as a licensed psychologist for over 30 years  (some of that did overlap with sea glass collecting!).

Anyway, why do people collect, accumulate, hoard?  There are so many reasons, and each person may have his or her own.  But, I do think that sea glass collectors love the beauty of the glass, the mystery of where it came from, the challenge of finding it along the shoreline, and the hope that they will find that elusive red, orange, or turquoise colored gem!  People who buy sea glass jewelry enjoy the final product, and, based on my repeat customers, don't get tired of adding to their collection either.

Since sea glass is ecological -- in a way, we are cleaning the world's beaches! Also, collecting it is somewhat addictive, for all the reasons I noted above.  There is always one more beach, one more piece of sea glass to find.  I hope you all enjoy the hunt -- and if you would like a custom made piece of jewelry with your very own find, please contact me.

Baroque Pearl and Sea Glass

I HAD TO CREATE SOMETHING WITH THE FABULOUS BAROQUE PEARLS I BOUGHT AT THE JEWELRY SHOW.  THE FIRST ITEM I CREATED IS THIS SEA GLASS AND PEARL PENDANT -- WHICH I NOW WEAR A LOT ON A GOLD CHAIN.  I WILL DESIGN SOME MORE FOR SALE, BUT AM THINKING ABOUT IT BEFORE I COMMIT TO A DESIGN.  MEANWHILE, I AM SHARING MY FIRST ONE.  THIS PEARL IS AN INCH LONG AND .75 INCH WIDE.

Wire Crocheting Again

You know how much I love sea glass -- well crocheting wire is catching up!  It is a challenge that I enjoy.  Now, I have found the nontarnish silver wire works great -- 26 gauge is best.  Here are a pair of earrings I made today -- with black crystals and freshwater pearls.  These are so stunning for evening wear.  They are in my online shop now.

Newest Finds at the Jewelry Expo

I spent hours at the jewelry expo today, and also some money.  I bought some amazing large baroque South Sea pearls that will soon be in some of my designs.  Also, I found wonderful Swarovski crystals in many colors to complement the sea glass i have found and some nice neckcords with silver clasps for the pendants.

I think it is interesting that the only sea glass designs I saw there were with fake or faux sea glass.  No genuine beachcombed sea glass at the show!  Meanwhile, the prices for silver and gold continue to climb!

Chicago and Wisconsin Sea Glass

Busy planning the next trip to Chicago to see the grand kids turn one and four!  Then a road trip to Wisconsin.  Hope to find some sea glass along the Lake Michigan shores -- so please let me know if you know of a good sea glass hunting beach.  I am researching it now, too!

More Crocheted Wire Jewelry

It is a challenge to crochet with wire, but I keep going back to it.  Here are a pair of earrings and a  bracelet made with gold brass nontarnish wire.  I love how shiny and pretty they are.  They are for sale at my online shop and on my website.  The bracelet just sold -- but the earrings are still available !  http://www.storenvy.com/stores/94651-lucky-sea-glass-jewelry

Playing golf with friends is such a fun activity for me.  Even though i can get frustrated with my game, the company and fresh air is always enjoyable.  And, I do like a challenge -- trying to get better at it.  Anyway, I have created some "lucky" sea glass pendants to wear when you are playing golf.  Maybe it will bring you good luck on the coursse.  I have some designs with sterling silver golf bags, some with golf clubs, and all have sea glass.  Here are a few -- more are on my website.  Oh, I also have some tennis designs, too!

Crocheting Jewelry With Wire

The wire crocheted jewelry I make is very popular, so I decided to try making some more with wire that doesn't tarnish and is less expensive.  The crocheted bracelet takes a lot of wire, and if I use sterling silver or gold filled wire, it can run into a lot of money!  So, I am experimenting with other wire that looks like silver and gold.   Here are a pair of earrings I crocheted with red coral branches, and I made a sea glass pendant with corals and pearls that looks great with the earrings.  I just put them on my online shop at storenvy.    Please let me know what you think!

Handmade vs. Mass Produced

There are so many reasons to seek out handmade items, so I thought today I'd mention a few.  Artists and crafters who create handmade designs are truly invested in what they make in terms of its quality and specialness.  I don't produce on a production line -- each of my jewelry designs is one of a kind, the only one available.  Actually, this keeps it interesting for me, as well as for my customers.  Wouldn't you rather have a rare, unique sea glass design rather than a mass produced, machine made item?

Artists are not usually creating for huge profits.  There is a passion and love of our art that impels us to create.  Of course, we need support, in order to afford the materials for the designs.  But, keep in mind, there are so many hidden costs -- marketing, fees, materials, commissions, etc.

Customer service is a priority for handmade artists.  I want you to be happy with your purchase! I have also helped people out who have lost an earring or one person who actually lost the chain for the necklace and wanted another one just like it.  I am always available to design custom pieces with your or my sea glass.

These are just a few of the advantages of buying handmade -- unique designs, quality, service, and fair prices.  Please consider it when you are ready to purchase.  Thanks.

Keeping Busy and Finding Treasures

It actually is a lot of work to switch out items in the stores that carry Lucky Sea Glass Jewelry.  They like to have new inventory every few months -- so that means I take back items and bring in new ones.  Things get circulated around -- but I do have to keep track of where they are.  Sometimes, I rediscover a piece I really love.  So I will share a pair of earrings (or two) that I think you may like.  Anyway, this has been taking some time -- so I haven't had time to write, to work on new ideas, and even to take pictures!  Plus, the new grandson (three weeks old) is keeping me busy, too!:)  Please remember you can shop at my website  http://www.luckyseaglass.com or at my facebook shop!  http://www.facebook.com/luckyseaglass

Organizing This Blog!

You may have noticed that I have started grouping some of the posts so you can more easily find ones on a topic.  So, if you go down the side of the blog, past popular posts, you will see Labels.  There are two right now -- one is for the posts about sea glass from around the world, and the other is about real or fake sea glass.

I hope this helps you find what you want to see.  I will group some more, as I work on this.
