Rare Cornflower Blue

Cornflower blue seaglass with sterling silver wire work and silver plated necklace by Lucky Sea Glass

I decided to create a necklace with a special cornflower blue seaglass piece from Lake Erie, NY.  This seaglass piece was actually found by a friend who was visiting Buffalo, NY., and she gave this to me.  It is for sale -- I have to put it on my website.  I used sterling silver wire to create a coil design on the X.

Glass Beach, Kauai and North Shore

Glass Beach
Glass Beach

Beach on North shore of Kauai

River flows to the ocean, Kauai
Here are the pictures I took while on Kauai this month.  As you can see, the glass beach near Port Allen is mostly tiny slivers.  I did find some larger seaglass pieces after beachcombing for about an hour, especially near the cliffside.  Still, Kauai is beautiful, truly the garden isle.  If you go, best to stay on the Poipu, south side, if you want a better chance of sun.  However, we drove over to the north side, and Hanalei and the beaches there are beautiful.  Really, how can you go wrong?

Drill or Wirewrap Seaglass? Which do you choose?

wirewrapped earrings
Drilled seaglass pendant

I have been drilling more seaglass lately, but still love the look of wire wrapped designs.  I am wondering which technique is preferred by you.  If you want to, please let me know.  You can see more examples of both techniques on this blog or on my website.

Seaglass on Kauai

Well, I have searched for seaglass on Kauai.  Of course, I went to glass beach near Port Allen,  beaches along the North Shore near Hanalei, and others.  I'd heard that the glass beach was becoming depleted, and that was true, compared to three or four years ago.  I found a fair number of pieces though by carefully walking the beach several times as the tide went out.  Best places were near the cliffs and rocks.  Later I heard that if you walk past the Chinese cemetery and go down to the beaches, there is good glass there.  I didn't do that, though, so don't know first hand.

One of the best finds in this search of Kauai wasn't the seaglass!  I will post a picture soon of a dachsund on a surfboard -- it was at 'Anini beach near Hanalei.  I love my Nikon CoolPix that can zoom in!  Aloha.

Emerald green is The 2013 color of the year

A recent Wall Street Journal reported that the Pantone color of the year is emerald green.  Hmmmm .It looks a lot like emerald green seaglass.  Check out Lucky Sea Glass pendants or earrings from Hawaii and Bermuda, to seewhat I mean.

From Hawaii!

One of my favorite places to visit and to look for seaglass is Hawaii.  Blue skies, gentle breezes, swaying palm trees, and maybe a specialty drink....You get the picture. On Kauai there is a glass beach that used to be a dumping ground.  Many people have found it and it may be depleted now.  I was last there three years ago, but hope to visit there very soon!  I will keep you posted.

On MAUI, I have been lucky to find seaglass near Hana and near Lahaina.
.
On Oahu,  On the North Shore.
On the Big Island,  I haven' t found any seaglass.  Have you?

What About River Glass?

I thought it might be helpful to write a little about river glass.  Actually, many seaglass collectors have found that river glass can be just as beautiful a find.  Usually, it is found near a river bank, and has been well tumbled.  Don't pick up the trash, shiny pieces from broken bottles!  I have found the best river glass near beaches, where a river flows into the ocean.

A friend of mine found some nice pieces near the Thames River in London.  I did find a couple of pieces in Germany, along the Moselle and I also have a few pieces from the Potomac River, near Alexnadria where George Washington lived!  So those of you who live near a river, but not an ocean or Great Lake,  consider river glass.
