Where does seaglass come from?

Today, I want to offer you some information about the origins of seaglass.  I was just talking with friends about some seaglass I found in Antarctica, near an old, abandoned whaling It probably came from currents from Asia, maybe Japan or maybe from glass debris from the whalers.  Some seaglass origins remain mysterious and unknown.  Others are pretty obvious, like old bottles -  whisky, beer, coca cola, fresca, etc.  The rarer the color, like red or orange, it is easier to guess its provenance.  Most orange, for example, comes from art glass like vases, whereas whites can come from windows, bottles, dinner ware.  If you want to learn more about the origins of seaglass, I would suggest you research old bottles.  A wonderful resource that I use is an identification deck of cards published by Sea Glass publishing. com   A friend of mine bought it for me as a gift, but you surely can order it on line.  Also, it has pictures of the various colors of seaglass.  Remember though, that pure seaglass is tumbled by the seas, not by a machine, not manufactured, not "seeded" in an ocean, and is smooth and soft in texture, not sharp. 

Lily Show in Virginia

These are such beautiful flowers, I have to share them.  I  took the pictures last week at a Lily show competition in Virginia.  The flowers are judged as well as the arrangements.  I just enjoyed looking at them all!

A Novel About Seaglass

Here's the perfect novel to read at the beach, and it is entitled Sea Glass by Anita Shreve.   I read it with my book club about five or six years ago, and it really intrigued me, and started me on my own quest for sea glass.  Now I am rereading it, since I can appreciate the descriptions of the sea glass finds so much more.

More Seashells and Seaglass

You Get What You Pay For

If you have studied up on seaglass, you know that prices are all over the map.  Of course, most artisans who use pure, beachcombed seaglass and fine metals and gemstones charge accordingly. You may find there are dealers who price their items very low in comparison, but be careful, especially if they are rare colors of seaglass like orange, red, blue, yellow. These items are likely to be fake, "artisan", manmade, artificial, crafted, tumbled "seaglass" lookalikes and the metals may be silver tone, gold colored. Do you really want that?

 Also, there are manufactured pieces, not handmade by an artist.  If you think diamond vs. rhinestone, you get my point, but in this case, the "diamond" doesn't cost that much more than the fake!

Seaglass earrings and a unisex pendant
